Next month, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will issue new Medicare cards. All individuals who are enrolled in Medicare Supplement Insurance (also known as Medigap) will receive new cards, as will individuals who are insured with a Medicare Advantage Plan. If you have MA insurance, you will receive a new Medicare card that will replace your Original Medicare card, but the Medicare Advantage plan card will remain the same.
New Medicare cards will be mailed out beginning April 2018. The change was motivated by the exposure of Social Security Numbers on current Medicare cards. In the new cards, the use of your Social Security Number will be replaced by a Medicare number that includes less personal information. Physically, the new cards will look nearly identical to previous cards with the red, white and blue color scheme. A sample card from CMS is pictured below:
According to the CMS website, cards will be issued and mailed in waves, as shown in the table below. Ohio is in the seventh (and last) wave of cards, which are set to be mailed after June 2018.
Unfortunately for seniors, changes like this become prime time for fraudulent and suspicious activity aimed at taking advantage of the situation. If you have any concerns about your new Medicare card or anyone calling you for personal information, please contact Vince Homan Insurance right away!
